Meditation + Tea

One of the most popular activities that has been associated with tea is meditation, due to its calming, zen, and brain stimulating effects. Meditation has been proven to help clear and prep the mind to enhance focus, productivity, and positive vibes.

In fact, there are numerous meditation exercises that consist of a combination of both meditation and tea at the same time.

For those of you who have never tried meditation, below is a simple exercise you can follow and try for yourself. When doing this, try to keep your mind in the moment with the task at hand and focus on the little details:

1. Just boil the water: Don’t do anything else and notice the little details. Focus on your breath and allow this experience to set the tone. Water is the majority of both our bodies and the Earth. Water is a miracle, and so is electricity/heat used to boil it. Appreciate them.

2. Add about 1 cup (6-8oz) of boiled water to 1 tablespoon of tea: Keep the tea leaves steeped for 5 minutes. Use this time to reflect on the process of how the boiling water is able to extract the colour and flavour from the tea leaves. Notice the steam wafting up. Notice the aromas arising out of your cup. Continue to focus on your breathing while you try to reach a place of zen.

3. Remove the tea bag/infuser and sit with the tea for 120 seconds: Let it cool while noticing the color and aroma of the tea.  Appreciate the fact that this was made possible by someone thousands of miles away who picked the leaves. Be in the moment.

4. Drink your tea. Sip slowly. Pay attention to the temperature. Savour the taste. Give thanks for this wonderful drink you have created!

 

You will notice that taking the time to perform a routine task you never used to think about has suddenly provided you with more inner peace and positive zen. Now try to take this attitude towards everything you do in life and see how much more enriched the day-to-day activities you once dreaded become!
